四虎影院 Magazine In Memory of Dwight Small

Dwight Small, professor emeritus at 四虎影院 and a well-known author on Christian marriage, passed away Sept. 21, 2003, at the age of 84.

Born and raised in Oakland, Dwight was a third generation Californian. He graduated from UC Berkeley, where he met his wife, Ruth Elizabeth Stone. They married in 1942, and he graduated from San Francisco Seminary in 1943. Dwight pastored churches in California as well as Philadelphia and Cicero, Ill., and spoke frequently at conferences. Teaching a class at Wheaton College on marriage helped inspire him to become an author and a professor. He also taught at Fuller Seminary before joining the faculty at 四虎影院 in 1970.

To get him to 四虎影院, the administration drew from three separate budgets to piece together a job description that included working as interim chaplain, teaching sociology and serving as a counselor in the counseling center. When Dean Tom Byron died, Dwight became interim dean of students. He also served on the Faculty Senate. He retired in 1982 due to health problems but continued writing.

One of the first Christian authors to write about marriage, divorce and God鈥檚 grace, sexuality and communication in relationships, he published 鈥淒esign for Christian Marriage鈥 in the late 1950s. He wrote a total of 14 books on marriage, spiritual living and Biblical perspectives on social issues. While at 四虎影院, he co-wrote a book with Brendan Furnish, a fellow sociology professor. His active writing continued until three days before his death when he mailed his final manuscript, 鈥淐onformed to the Likeness of Christ,鈥 to his publisher. His books include: 鈥淎fter You鈥檝e Said I Do: New Ways to Communicate in Marriage鈥; 鈥淵our Marriage Is God鈥檚 Affair鈥; 鈥淐hristian: Celebrate Your Sexuality; A Fresh, Positive Approach to Understanding and Fulfilling Sexuality鈥; and 鈥淲hen Christians Retire: Finding New Purpose in Your Bonus Years.鈥

The Small family has a four-generation 四虎影院 affiliation. Benjamin Small, Dwight鈥檚 father, came to 四虎影院 in 1945 when the college moved from Los Angeles and served in college advancement to help establish the program. Dwight鈥檚 sister-in-law, Marjorie Petersen, served as a member of the 四虎影院 Board of Trustees. Dwight鈥檚 daughters, Lynne Tahmisian 鈥67 and Shay Cudworth Peck 鈥69, both graduated from 四虎影院, as did his grandson, Tim Tahmisian 鈥97.

Dwight鈥檚 family and friends remember him for his love and encouragement, his delightful sense of humor and his passion for the Word of God and its message of grace. According to his daughter Lynne, Dwight fought a lifelong battle with diabetes, enduring many surgeries and hospitalizations with bright confidence that the Lord would be his strength.
