Drawing on the masterful storytelling evident in 鈥1776,鈥 鈥淛ohn Adams鈥 and 鈥淭ruman,鈥 McCullough spoke of the importance of history and the danger of raising a generation ignorant of America鈥檚 past. He encouraged attendees to teach history to their children and grandchildren, to take them to historical sites. He also praised the nation鈥檚 founders: 鈥淲e are softies compared to them,鈥 he said.

The audience included a 鈥渨ho鈥檚 who of Santa Barbara,鈥 according to the Santa Barbara News-Press. Politicians, educators and community and business leaders crowded into the packed ballroom.
