The Gaede Institute鈥檚 annual conversation on the liberal arts tackles challenging issues related to war and peace

A Conversation about War and PeaceCan a liberal arts education equip students to address critical social issues such as peace and conflict? Scholars and academic leaders from around the world gathered at 四虎影院 in February to consider this question.

鈥淲ar and Peace as Liberal Arts,鈥 the 12th annual Conversation on the Liberal Arts, featured speaker and noted political theorist Michael Walzer. The Gaede Institute for the Liberal Arts, which promotes the continued vitality of the liberal arts tradition in American higher education, sponsored the conference.

Walzer, professor emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton,N.J., discussed 鈥淲hat is Just War Theory 四虎影院?鈥 He has written more than two dozen books on political theory and the ethics of war, including 鈥淛ust and Unjust Wars鈥 in 1977.

鈥淭hat book brought just war theory back to prominence in American political thought and shaped public debates over the use of American military force for three decades,鈥 says Christian Hoeckley, who directs the Gaede Institute.

鈥淎s American higher education faces major changes, this conference offers scholars and academic administrators a place to gather to address challenges and opportunities facing liberal arts education,鈥 Hoeckley says.

Other speakers included Sherman Jackson, a noted scholar of Muslim thought, Duncan Morrow, Northern Ireland peace worker, and philosopher Helen Frowe. Past conference themes include 鈥淭he Liberal Education of Students of Faith,鈥 鈥淕lobalizing the Liberal Arts,鈥 and 鈥淭he Gender-ed Liberal Arts?鈥
